Paul Clark Jr. was 19 years old when he was arrested and later convicted of a 1987 murder committed during an attempted robbery in Highland Park, Michigan. The prosecution’s case relied heavily on two witnesses whose accounts changed during the investigation. One witness initially said he did not know the gunman and later implicated another person before identifying Clark. A second witness did not identify Clark in a police lineup but identified him at a court hearing the following day.
Years later, new evidence implicated another man, Alex Scott, who had committed a similar robbery and murder near the same bar less than three months later. Photographs taken shortly after the crime showed Scott with a fresh facial wound, which was significant because the victim was found holding a knife and appeared to have fought his attacker. Another man also testified that Scott had confessed to the killing while they were incarcerated together.
A judge vacated Clark’s convictions in April 2024 after finding that evidence concerning Scott and the photographs had not been disclosed to the defense. Clark was released in May 2024, and the prosecution dismissed the charges that July. He spent 36 years, six months, and seven days wrongfully incarcerated.
