Why This Work Matters
For people who have survived wrongful conviction, the journey does not end with release. Freedom does not guarantee stability. Reentry can be overwhelming, with barriers to housing, employment, and mental health support.
Many are forced to rebuild with little to no support.
The Organization of Exonerees exists to change that. We prioritize the voices and leadership of those directly impacted. We provide direct support, expand public understanding, and contribute to informed systemic reform, working to ensure no one has to navigate this journey alone.
This work is about restoring stability, dignity, and a sense of belonging.
Our Mission
The Organization of Exonerees is a peer-led organization made up of individuals who have experienced wrongful conviction and incarceration. We were founded out of necessity. Our purpose is to address the lack of support available to innocent people as they rebuild their lives after release.
We work to provide comprehensive reentry support. This includes assistance with housing, identification, financial stability, healthcare, and mental health services. We ensure exonerees have the resources needed to rebuild with dignity and stability.
We educate the public about wrongful convictions and support informed reforms that strengthen accountability across the justice system.
We have been doing this work since 2021 and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2022.
